A lot of people who have never been to a Chiropractor ask this question. They might be suffering with pain and feel like they have tried everything else, but because they don't really know what to expect if they see a Chiropractor, they are nervous to try it.
I get it! It's human nature to be fearful of the unknown. And, it doesn't help when certain falsehoods are floating around, especially when these are perpetuated by other health professionals.
Like any health profession, Chiropractic absolutely can't fix everything. Some people may get no relief, and a small number of people may even feel they are worse off after an adjustment. While we have a high success rate, nothing is ever guaranteed!
However, if you are facing a choice between a lifetime of medication or even spinal surgery versus seeing a Chiropractor, you cannot make a safe and educated decision without the facts.
First of all, how many people die per year from a Chiropractic treatment? No idea? Well, if the answer was even 1 person, wouldn't it be plastered across every news outlet in the country?
The worst odds I have ever seen quoted in a study showing the risk of major neurological damage following a Chiropractic adjustment is 1 in 4 million. Not death, just a major injury.
How does the "safe" option of NSAIDS rank? (Aspirin or Ibuprofen for example) There is a 400 in 1 million chance of dying due to a severe bleed somewhere in the stomach or colon. This doesn't count liver and stomach damage that doesn't end in death. Or the fact that painkillers have quickly become the number 1 drug addiction in this country.
Mortality rate for spinal surgery? 7 in 10,000.
So if you are nervous to try Chiropractic, just know that it is actually the safest option out there by far when compared to any medical interventions. And, if Chiropractic can't help you, then you still have medications and surgery to try. But if you try surgery first, and it doesn't help you, there may be irreversible damage that cannot be fixed.
