Should You Be Scared Of Your Back Pain?

You have been mislead with some very serious myths when it comes to back pain and how to manage it!

The first myth is that as soon as you have pain you should pop some pain relievers. Sometimes, yes, you will experience pain that is so severe that you may want to reach for the pain medications. If this is the case make sure it is for very short term use only, as study after study continues to prove that relying on pain medication for your back pain is one of the worst options you can pursue. 

But remember, pain is just an alarm telling your brain that something is wrong. So if you go and medicate to numb the pain, you run the risk of making the problem much worse and creating far more damage than you already have.

The next myth is that as soon as you experience back pain you should stop exercising and rest. This may be the most damaging advice out there. The worst thing you can do when it comes to back pain is stop moving altogether and just sit or rest in bed. 

If your pain is severe then obviously you are not going to do a crossfit session that day, or maybe any formal exercise, but even just picking yourself up out of a chair and slowly shuffling around the living room will help immensely.

We often hear from people that they "overdid it" and now their back hurts more. But take it from us, it is much easier to settle down your back pain from overdoing it rather than not doing enough with some ice, gentle exercises and Chiropractic adjustments. 

When you stop moving, all of your spinal joints and tissues stiffen up, inflammation builds in the area, and now it will take a lot more to get your spinal mechanic
s back to normal and get you out of pain and moving freely again.

The only disclaimer is to still be smart about your pain. If you have pain that is extreme, and it is shooting down your leg, then you probably shouldn't be helping someone move heavy furniture, or running 10 miles etc. 

Ultimately, back pain is actually very rarely something to be afraid of, especially if you know how to manage it correctly. Immediately get ice on your back, slow down from whatever you're doing but don't stop moving altogether for long periods, and get assessed by a Chiropractor as soon as you can!
