14 Ways To Improve Your Memory And Brain Function

We all go through periods where we suffer from lack of focus, creativity, brainpower, or memory issues. And while sometimes there can be a pathological reason, for most of us if we help our brain and nervous system to function better, we can improve all of these areas. If you or someone you know is suffering from a neuro-degenerative disease such as alzheimer's or parkinson's, then a lot of these recommendations become even more important as supplements to whatever medical treatment they are undergoing. So here's 14 different things you can do to improve your mental clarity: Vitamin D - This is actually a steroid hormone and not a vitamin, and it has a major effect on the central nervous systems. Some research is even linking low vitamin D levels to lower cognitive function. Vitamin K2 - This vitamin helps protect our nerves in the brain from free radical damage, so there's a reason why one the highest concentrations of this vitamin in our body is contained i

Are You Suffering From "Leaky Brain?"

Almost everyone has heard of leaky gut, but what about leaky brain? And no we don’t mean that you actually leak brain material. It’s when your blood-brain barrier becomes too permeable and instead of protecting you, it lets in all sorts of inflammatory and toxic particles that damage the brain and nervous system. In this week’s blog we share 12 things you can do immediately to improve your blood brain barrier and help your brain function better. Check out this episode!

12 Ways To Fix A Leaky Brain

Our brain, just like our gut, is protected by a membrane (the blood-brain barrier) that is very selective in deciding what can get in and get out. Also just like our gut, this membrane can be damaged and created a leaky brain, where just like leaky gut, inflammatory particles and toxins start to pass back and forward across this membrane. As you can imagine, this leads to a whole host of problems! So how do we keep our blood brain barrier healthy? Author Ben Greenfield, in his amazing book "Boundless", shares 12 simple ways to help correct this leaky brain phenomenon: Get More Sleep - Sleep loss impairs the immune system and keeps us suck in a fight/flight response which limits the ability of the cells that make up the blood-brain barrier to repair and heal. If you struggle with sleep try taking melatonin for a short period of time. Limit Your Alcohol Intake - High amounts of ethanol (alcohol) break down into acetaldehyde which can cross the barrier and wreak havoc.

8 Ways To Help With Digestion & Gut Issues

Poor gut health leads to all sorts of problems, from IBS and poor digestion to even affecting the chemicals released from our brains! We need our digestive system functioning properly as it protects us from a lot of toxins, and aids the liver in detoxifying our bodies. Regardless of what gut ailments you suffer from, here's 8 things that might be an issue (and what you can do to resolve it!) Avoid Glyphosate  - Glyphosate is proving to be one of the most toxic chemicals known to humans, and unfortunately is sprayed on the majority of our non-organic crops. It creates major leaky gut issues, demineralizes the body, and is heavily linked to non-hodgkin's lymphoma as well as other cancers. Avoid this substance as much as humanly possible! Avoid Gluten and wheat  - While some people are actually intolerant to wheat and gluten due to celiac disease, most people aren't actually intolerant to gluten. Its the gliadin or WGA in gluten and wheat products that creates major

10 Ways To Rewire Your Brain

Have you ever felt like you have brain fog? Or don't sleep well? Or feel like you're always stressed and anxious? Well you might have a neurotransmitter problem. These chemicals are what triggers the nerve impulses that allows the brain to communicate with the rest of the body. You've probably heard of some of these - serotonin and dopamine are 2 examples. If we have a deficiency, or an excess of these chemicals then our brain and body cannot function properly. So here's 10 ways to help balance out your neurotransmitters. Check out this episode!

10 Ways To Clean Up Your Brain Function

Most people know that our brain communicates with every cell in the body via the nervous system. It sends and receives it's messages through the nerves every split second of every day. To initiate this nervous system activity, the brain will release chemicals called neurotransmitters which then initiate the messages running along the chain of nerves. So we don't need to state the obvious that it's very important that these chemicals work properly. When we release too much or not enough, then all sorts of miscommunication can develop, resulting in a wide array of health problems. Here's 10 ways you can help support neurotransmitter health (and therefore brain and nervous system health): Limit Stimulants - We aren't saying avoid coffee and all caffeine, although you do want to make sure you're not overdoing it. But definitely avoid chemicals that give you a huge spike of excitatory neurotransmitter activity as it creates major long term damage (for exa

Strength Training Equals A Longer, Healthier Life!

There's no question that if we want to live a long and healthy life, we need to be able to lift heavy weights. No this doesn't mean you have to end up looking like a body builder, in fact, lean but explosive,  powerful, and efficient muscles will give you the best longevity. And age cannot be a factor. No matter how old you are, you can start today (and need to). A National Health Institute Survey found that older adults who engaged in strength training at least twice a eek had 46% lower odds of death for any reason than those who did not! But the thought of strength training can be very intimidating for a lot of people as they think it means having to go to a gym and lift really heavy weights or use complicated machines. Thankfully this isn't the case. Yes, if you want to add muscle mass as fast possible then you need to either lift really heavy weights or utilize very slow weight training (which we will discuss later in this blog). But research is showing that you

8 Things All Teenage Athletes Need To Know

We see so many teenage athletes in our offices suffering from different injuries, or being unhappy with their sporting results, and the biggest contributor to both is because most young athletes don't treat their body like an elite athlete does. This is probably true for most adult athletes too, and the same tips apply. So what can our young athletes do to improve sporting performance, deal with less injuries, and recover faster when they do get injured? A lot of things, actually! Here's some of the most important foundations but this list is certainly not all inclusive. Give your body the right fuel - If you own a ferrari you don't put cheap gasoline in it, you give it the premium fuel you can find. The same goes for our body, if we feed it garbage then we will get garbage results. Athletes need a diet high in healthy fats, good quality protein, not too much in the way of carbs (yes this even applies for long distance athletes), and virtually no sugar or junk food.
